 Stamp climate classification of India

  • Stamp uses temperature, topography, and rainfall variables in the classification of Indian climates.
  • Based on the temperature, an 18-degree isotherm of means the monthly temperature of January months.
  • 18-degree isotherm roughly crosses the parallel of tropic of cancer and divides India into two major climatic regions:
    • Temperate or continental India lies north of an 18-degree isotherm.
    • The tropical climate lies 18 degrees south of the isotherm.

Stamp Climatic classification of India


Based on the rainfall and topography, it is further divided into 11 climatic regions of India:
Temperate or continental India:

Himalayan region;

  • West Himalayan; low rainfall
  • East Himalayan: very high rainfall having more than 200 cm.
Northwestern region:
  • Moderate rainfall having less than 200 cm.
  • Region:
    • Punjab, the southern part of Jammu Kashmir.

Arid low land:

  • Region :
    • Desert region of Rajasthan and Kachchh region of Gujarat.
  • Having less than 40 cm of rainfall.

Regions of moderate rainfall:

  • Punjab, Haryana, western UP, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Rainfall has between 40 to 80cm.
Transition zone:
  • Having rainfall between 100 to 200 cm.
  • Regions: Eastern up and Bihar.

Tropical India:

  • Region of very heavy rainfall; more than 200 cm:
  • Regions: Meghalayan, Assam,  Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram.

Region of heavy rainfall: 100 to 200 cm.

  • Region:. Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Andhra Pradesh.
Region of moderate rainfall:.
  • Rainfall is 50 to 100 cm.
  • Between western and Eastern Ghats.

Konkan coast:

  • From Mumbai to Goa, having rainfall of more than 200 cm.
Malabar coast:
  • From Goa to Kanyakumari
  • Having a rainfall of more than 250 cm.

Tamil Nadu;

  • Rainfall between 100 to 200.
  • Receive rainfall in winter by the northeast monsoon
