What is Apiculture?

Apiculture is also called Beekeeping and it is part of the Sweet revolution.

Apiculture=Api+ culture; Api means bee and culture mean cultivation; Apiculture means scientific method cultivation of honeybees.

There are four components in whole honey processing:

  • Honey Comb
  • Colonies
  • Bee
  • Process

Honey Comb; It is hexagonal wax. It is a storehouse of honey.

Colonies; Group of Honey Comb is called colonies. One colony approximately can produce 19 kg of honey.

Bees:

There are three types of Bees in colonies, work is strictly divided between them.

  • Queen; role to lay  eggs
  • Drone; Male bees; role to fertilize the egg.
  • Worker; role to collect the honey.

Honey making process by bees:

Worker bees collect the nectar, pollen, and sucrose from the flower.

Collected materials mixed with saliva and undergo some chemical changes and deposited into a honeycomb.

Honey production by country;

  • China is the largest producer followed by Turkey.
  • India is in 8th position in 2018

Importance of apiculture and beekeeping;

  • Produce honey; honey as food have high nutritional values and used as medicine
  • Produces beeswax that is used in cosmetics and polishes.
  • Bees are pollinators; if cultivated along with the crops, it will increase the yield of crops. Crops also increase beekeeping. Agriculture and apiculture; both mutually get benefitted.
  • Apiculture can increase the farmer's income and would help achieve the target of doubling the farming income by 2022.
  • India has great potential and we have not utilized it as lacking the knowledge about beekeeping to farmers.

Beekeeping is relatively easy, however, requires some specialized knowledge. The following knowledge needed in apiculture:

  • Knowledge of the nature and habits of bees needed for the selection of suitable locations.
  • Catching and hiving of growth of bees
  • Management of beehives during different seasons.
  • Handling and collecting honey and beeswax.
