Poultry Farming:

The rearing, breeding, and caring domesticated of birds such as chicken, ducks, Swans, pigeon for eggs, and meat are called poultry farming. The largest share of livestock resources comes from poultry farming.

Poultry products are rich sources of animal protein.

Poultry birds are also known as fowls.

There are two types of poultry birds:

  • Broilers
  • Layers

 Broilers birds are grown for meat. They need protein and an adequate amount of fat to grow fast and gain weight.

Layers birds are female and reared for laying eggs.


For getting desirable results crossbreeding is done between Indian chick( Aseel) and foreign Chick ( Leghorn).

The following are desirable:

  • Heavy broiler and a higher number of eggs laying capacity.
  • Dwarf broiler parent for commercial production
  • Summer adoption capacity
  • Low maintenance requirement


Poultry management Practices or Poultry farm management:

The following stages of management:

  • Brooding stages
  • Laying stage

Brooding stages:

  • High care, proper feeding,  and stabilized temperature required for newly hatched chicks,
  • 6 to 8 weeks.

Laying stage:

  • Mature females start giving eggs after 22 weeks

For overall management:

  • For good production of poultry birds, good management practices required. Such as:
  • Maintenance of temperature and hygienic conditions in housing.
  • Need proper cleaning, sanitation, spraying of disinfection, and proper vaccination.
  • Good quality  of poultry feeding
  • Prevention and control of disease 
  • Housing, nutritional, and environmental requirement of the broiler and egger layer are different.
  • For broiler; protein and adequate fat needed.
  • For egg layers; vitamin A and K needed.
  • Poultry forms suffer nutritional disease; viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and nutritional deficiency.


Poultry Farming advantage:

  • High return with little investment and need little space.
  • Easy former to diversify income
  • 3 to 4 kg of feeding can raise 2 kg of meat.

Disadvantage:

  • H5N1 deadly virus
