Distribution of Minerals Resources in India| Resources | Geography of India

 As peninsular India is made up of Igneous and metamorphic rocks, hence most of the metallic minerals are found in peninsular India.

As minerals are not equally distributed in peninsular India, it occurs in its packet forms. Minerals are found in the following regions:

  • North Eastern Plateau region
  • Southwestern Plateau Region
  • North-Western region
  • Himalayan Belt


North Eastern Plateau Region:

It covers Chhotanagpur plateaus comprises of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and part of Chhattisgarh.

Important minerals:

  • Iron Ore
  • Coal
  • Manganese
  • Bauxite
  • Mica
  • Uranium
  • Copper

All the raw materials of steel and iron industries are found here, that is why most of the steel industries are located here.


South-Western Plateau Region:

  • It extends over Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
  • Important Minerals:
    • Iron ore
    • Manganese
    • Bauxite
    • Limestone
    • Coal
  • In Goa: 
    • Iron ore
  • In Kerala:
    • Monazite sand
    • Thorium
    • Bauxite


North Western Region:

  • It comprises of Aravali in Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat.
  • Mineral associated with Dharwar system Uranium, Copper, and Zinc is found here.
  • In Rajasthan, building stones are found such as:
  • Sandstone
  • Granite
  • Marble
  • Gypsum
  • Dolamite 
  • The basic raw material of the Cement Industry:
    • Sandstone
    • Dolamite
  • Gujarat and Rajasthan: Salt


Himalayan Belt:

  • Copper
  • lead
  • Zinc
  • Cobalt
  • Tungsten
  • Mineral oil deposit in Assam
