Development of fertilizer industries in India:

  • 1906 at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu: First fertilizer industry
  • 1966: First large scale ureas plant
  • 1967: DAP plant at Baroda
  •  after 1988 masses scale of nitrogen, phosphorous, potash being reproduced in India,

The raw material of fertilizer:

  • Natural gas-hydro carbon
  • Sulfur
  • Phosphate rock
  • Potassium salt
  • Micronutrients
  • Water
  • Air

Fertilizer usage pattern from 2001 to 2008:

Current status:

  • As of now, we are not able to produce enough fertilizer for domestic consumption, the government assures us to make enough fertilizer production infrastructure in India by 2013 under Atmnirbhar Bharat. reduce import to zero.
  • Stagnant of capacity and production
  • High import and raw material and finished fertilizer
  • Unsustainable level of subsidy burden
  • spatial variation of fertilizer usage
  • Deficiency in other nutrients
  • usage of fertilizer without a soil test

New policies:

  • Fortification of nutrition
  • Nim coated ureas
  • Nutrients based pricing
  • Usage of micronutrients fertilizer
