Petroleum

  • The literal meaning of Petroleum is rock oil
  • Petroleum is the second largest energy source of India after Coal
  • Crude petroleum occurs in sedimentary rock of the tertiary period.
  • It extracted through drilling
  • It is valuable and also called Black gold
  • Crude petroleum consists of hydrocarbon of liquid and gaseous states varying in chemical and physical composition.


Major oil fields in India 

  • Digboi in Assam
  • Mumbai High  
  • Krishna and Godavari Delta.
  • Gujarat:
    • Ankleshwar 
    • Kallol 



Oil extracted from crude oil which contains many impurities needs refine first to use 

There are two types of Refineries in India 

  • First, field-based for example Digboi 
  • The second market base, for example, Barauni 

Petroleum is essential to the source of the combustion engine in automobiles, Railways, and aircraft. The byproduct of petroleum is sources of petrochemical industries :

  • Fertilizer
  • Synthetic rubber
  • Synthetic fiber
  • Medicines
  • Vaseline
  • Lubricant 
  • wax 
  • Soap 
  • Cosmetic product.



Natural gas

 The Gas Authority of India Limited was set up in 1984 as a public sector to transport and market natural gases. 

  • It is found along with the oil field but exclusive reserves or also found.
  • Eastern Coast: Tamilnadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh
  • Jaisalmer Rajasthan 
  • Tripura
  • Offshore well in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
