The seed is the basic input for agriculture, quality of seeds needed for good productivity. As per an estimate, the good quality of seeds alone ensures 25 % of productivity.

Seed infrastructure development in India;

  • Many seed-based industries developed along with the green revolution.
  • The Department of agriculture and co-operation is the implementation agency of " developing and strengthening facilities for production and distribution of quality seeds" from 2005 in India.
  • 100 % FDI under the automatic route allowed to develop of the seed infrastructure in India

HYV: 

High yielding variety; genetically manipulated seeds that occur naturally and may be facilitated by humans.

Genetic Modified Seed;

 GM seeds; It is also a genetically manipulated seed but it is done in the lap of artificial manners.


Within Hybrid seed, here are three generations of seeds:

  • Breeder; genetically pure and self-pollinated species.
  • foundation seed
  • Certified seed; must meet the standard of seed certification.

Seed companies supply parent seed that is breeder seed to the farmer and also gave technical advice to farmers to produce the quality of seeds. Companies buy back the quality of seeds from farmers.

Most of the hybrid seed production is done in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

The major seed production in Uttar Pradesh:

  • Paddy
  • Wheat
  • mustard
  • Gram
  • Lentil
