a. All societies do not think similarly about the roles that boys and girls play. (True)

Answer:

Indian society has distinct values and works to play for men and women whereas in the Samoan Islands there is not much difference in the values of women and men.


b. Our society does not make distinctions between boys and girls when they are growing up. (False)

Answer:

  • Different types of toys are given to boys and girls.
  • Society teaches the values and works for boys and girls differently.

c. Women who stay at home do not work. (False)

Answer:

Women who stay at home  do the following things:

  • Sweeping
  • Cleaning
  • Washing clothes
  • Making dishes and meal
  • Looking after young children and elderly persons.


d. The work that women do is less valued than that of men. ( False)

Answer:

It is the society that discriminates against the work of women and men. Women's work is not less valued as they give more time and energy to work.


2. Housework is invisible and unpaid work. Housework is physically demanding. Housework is time-consuming.

Write in your own words what is meant by the terms ‘invisible’, ‘physically demanding’, and ‘time consuming’?

Give one example of each based on the household tasks undertaken by women in your home.

Answer:

  • "Invisible " means women have to do work the same work daily that does not seem productive to society while they are the backbone for other works.
  • "physically demanding" means they have to physically as, without a physical presence, children and an elderly person take care are not possible.
  • "time-consuming" means it takes lots of time to complete. For example, washing cloth, preparing means, baby feeding, etc.


3. Make a list of toys and games that boys typically play and another for girls. If there is a difference between the two lists, can you think of some reasons why this is so? Does this have any relationship to the roles children have to play as adults?

Answer:

  • Boy generally plays with electronic gadgets such as cars, guns, etc, and football, volleyball, bats, etc.
  • Girls generally play with dolls, rangoli, etc.

The reason for a different list is:

  • They have a different role to play later on.
  • Societies assign different values to play the role of men and women.
