Water |Exercises solution | Class 7| Our Environment UPSC

 1. Answer the following questions.

(i) What is precipitation?

Answer:

Sun heat cause evaporation of water into vapor; When water vapor cools down when it reaches in the height, it condenses and forms clouds. From there, it falls down in the form of rain, snow, and sleet; is called precipitation.

(ii) What is the water cycle?

Answer:

The process in which water changes its form and circulates from ocean to atmosphere to land to ocean in a cyclic manner is called the water cycle.

(iii) What are the factors affecting the height of the waves?

Answer:

The following factors affecting the height of the waves:

  • Winds speed; larger the wind speed larger the height of the waves.
  • Earthquakes and volcanos eruptions in the ocean water cause huge tsunami waves.

(iv) Which factors affect the movement of ocean water?

Answer:

  • The movement of ocean water gets affected by the wave, tides, and currents.

(v) What are tides and how are they caused?

Answer:

  • The rise and fall of ocean water twice a day is called tides. Tides are formed due to the gravitation pull of the moon and Sun.

(vi) What are ocean currents?

Answer:

The movement of ocean water in a particular direction like river flow is called ocean current. the ocean current is like the river of the ocean.

2. Give reasons.

(i) Ocean water is salty.

Answer:

Due to weathering process, salt came up from rocks. This salt gets dissolved in precipitated water and reaches the ocean through river channels and surface runoff. Over time, ocean water becomes salty.

(ii) The quality of water is deteriorating.

Answer:

Due to pollution, unwanted organic and inorganic material gets dissolved in the water.

3. Tick the correct answer.
