Indirect sources of information of the interior of the earth

Question:

Briefly explain the indirect sources of information on the interior of the earth other than those of seismic activity.

Answer:

The following are the indirect sources of information on the interior of the earth:

  • Meteors Analysis
  • Earth's Gravitation force
  • Earth's Magnetic Field
  • Analysis of properties of rock
  • Seismic activities or Earthquake

Meteors Analysis:

  • The material and composition available in meteors are similar to the material and composition of the Earth. The study of meteors gives a lot of information about our earth because both are made of the same material.

Earth's Gravitation force:

The force of gravity on Earth is not the same at all latitudes, it is less at the equator and it is highest at the poles. The force of gravity is more at the poles because the distance between the poles from the center of the earth is less as compared to the distance from the center to the equator.

The variation in the force of gravity is also due to the unequal distribution of materials inside the earth. From this, it can be concluded that the earth is bulged at the equator and flattened at the pole and there is an uneven distribution of substances in the interior of the earth.

Earth's Magnetic Field:

From the Earth's magnetic field, we can conclude that the "convection current" flows inside the Earth. This "convection current" originates from the Earth's outer core, which is made up of a mixture of molten iron and nickel.

Properties of rock

By analyzing the properties of rocks, we get information about the interior of the earth. From the mining,  we know that the density of the rocks increases with increasing depth. With the rate of change in temperature, pressure, and density, scientists have found the approximate temperature, pressure, and density at different depths of the Earth.
