What were the forces suggested by Wegener for the movement of the continents?

Question.

What were the forces suggested by Wegener for the movement of the continents?

Answer:

The German Climatologist, Alfred Wegener gave the continental drift theory in 1912. His theory explains the distribution of continents and oceans.

As per Wegener, there were two forces that worked for drifting.

  • Pole-fleeing force
  • Tidal force

Pole fleeing force:

  • Due to rotation, there is a bulge at the equator. This bulge worked as the driving force of continents towards the poles.

Tidal Force:

  • The tidal force is due to the attraction of the moon and the sun and it developed over the ocean water. Wegener believed that tidal force would have been effective when applied over million years.
