Question.

Analyze the problems associated with Third World urbanization with examples. ( 63rd BPSC, 2019)

Answer.

The group of developing countries is also known as the Third World. Although there is the rapid development of urbanization in the third world, they are still facing many problems in urbanization which are listed below:

  • Inadequate urban infrastructure and high population density
  • Lack of economic opportunity and high crime rate
  • growing slum
  • Flooding
  • resource depletion
  • Pollution

Inadequate urban infrastructure and high population density:

In developing countries, the city is the center of development of the surrounding region. Many people migrate there from the surrounding area for better opportunities, resulting in:

  • There is a lack of housing.
  • The road is jammed and crowded.
  • There is a shortage of potable water.
  • Lack of hospital facilities.

Lack of economic opportunity and the high number of crimes:

  • The lack of economic opportunities for all urban populations leads to an increase in crime rates.

Growing slum:

  • Almost all cities in developing countries have slums and their numbers are increasing.

Flooding:

  • Poor drainage planning and dumping of garbage in the drain leads to waterlogging in urban areas with little rain during rainy days and is a common problem in third world cities.

Resource depletion:

  • The urban center has to face the problem of scarcity of resources like ground water and lack of forest etc.

Pollution:

  • Air, water, and solid waste pollution are at very high levels in third world urban centers
