Explain the ecological aspects of temperate grassland biomes. ( 63rd BPSC, 2019)

Answer. 

To explain the ecological aspect of a biome means to describe its climate, soil, flora, and fauna. Temperate grassland biomes are found in different parts of the world in higher latitudes between 35 and 65 degrees latitude, in the interior of continents in both hemispheres. It is known by different names in the world.

  • Prairies: North America
  • Velds: South Africa
  • Downs: Australia 
  • Pampas: Argentina

Ecological aspects of temperate grassland biome:


The climate of temperate grassland biome:

  • There is an extreme temperature;[hot summer and cold winter].
  • Precipitation: 5o to 75 cm annually.

Soils of temperate grasslands biome:

  • The upper layer of soil is fertile and the soil profile is also well developed and it is deep in color.

Flora of temperate grassland biome:

  • There are no trees in the temperate grassland biome.
  • The grass here is smaller than that of the tropical grassland.
  • Unlike the tropical grasslands, the grass here is thin, fresh, and rich in nutrition.
  • Temperate grasslands are ideal for farming and animal husbandry.
