 Chola Administration:

  • Cholas were subordinate to Pallavas kings later empire was established in 985 A.D. Rajaraja I and Rajendra I were the most powerful Chola ruler. Rajendra I was the son of Rajaraha I and he raided Sri Lanka and Southeast Asian countries.
  • Chola empire was divided into many regions and regions were further divided into Kottams, Nadu, Tehsil, and Village.

The following are important terminology of the Chola Empire:

  • Vetti: 
    • One type of tax, it is a form of forced labor.
  • Kadamai: 
    • Land revenue
  • Ur: 
    • Settlement of peasants
  • Kottams:
    •  Group of Nadu
  • Nadu: 
    • Group of village
  • Movendavelans: 
    • Rich landlord

The following are types of land:

  • Vellanvagai: 
    • Land of Non-Brahman peasant properties.
  • Brahmadeva: 
    • Lands gifted to Brahmanas.
  • Shalabhoga:
    •  Lands for the maintenance of a school.
  • Devadana, Tirunamattukheni: 
    • Land gifted to temple.
  • Pallichchhandam: 
    • Land donated to Jainism.
