Classical Dances of India UPSC[Prelims]

There are eight classical dances of India as per Sangeet Natak Academy. These are:

  • Bharatnatyam( Tamil Nadu)
  • Kathakali ( Kerala)
  • Miniyattam(Kerala)
  • Kuchipudi( Andhra Pradesh)
  • Odissi( Odisha]-Tribhaga
  • Kathak( North India)
  • Sattriya( Assam)
  • Manipuri( Manipur)

Two important Books:
  • Natyasashtra: Written by Bharat Muni
  • Abhinay Darpan: Acharya Nandikeshwar

Three components of Dances:
  • Natya: Dramatic components
  • Nritta: Movement
  • Nritya: Expression

Color coding of Kathakali dance:
  • The green color indicates virtue and dignity.
  • The red color indicated Sin.
  • The black color indicates Tamasika
  • The yellow color indicates Satvika and Rajasic
