The following are important rivers of India and their origin.

Indus River[ Vedic name: Sindhu]:

  • Origin: Northern side of Kailash range, Tibet.


Jhelum River[ Vedic Name: Vitasta]

  • Origin: Verang, Pir Panjal Range, Jammu, and Kashmir.


Ravi River[ Vedic name: Iravati or Parushani]:

  • Origin: Hanuman Tibba, Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh.


Satluj River[ Vedic Name: Satadree]

  • Origin: Rakshastal, Tibet.


Chenab River[ Vedic Name: Asikini]

  • Origin: Baralacha L pass, Himachal Pradesh.


Beas[ Vedic Name: Vipasa]

  • Origin: Beas Kund, Himachal Pradesh


North to South arrangement of the Indus river system:

  • Indus
  • Jhelum
  • Chenab
  • Ravi

  • Satluj


Brahmaputra River:

  • Origin: Near mansarovar, Tbet.
  • Names: 
    • Tsangpo in Tibet. 
    • Dihang in Arunachal Pradesh.


Ganga River:

  • Origin: Bhagirathi, Gangotri Glacier.


Yamuna:

  • Origin: Bandarpoonch Peak in Uttarakhand.


Narmada:

  • Origin: Amarkantak Hill, Madhya Pradesh.


Tapi:

  • Origin: Eastern Satpura range, Madhya Pradesh.


Godavari river:

  • Origin: Trimbakeshwar, Near Nasik.


Krishna River:

  • Origin: Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra.


Cauveri river:

  • Origin: Talakaveri or Brahamagir Hills of the Western Ghats in Karnataka.


Mahanadi River:

  • Origin: Satpura range, Chhatisgarh.


The following rivers are originated from the Eastern Ghats:

The following are West-flowing rivers arranged from north to south:
