Describe in detail the role of the present U.P. government in the development of tourism. ( UPPSC, 2020, 10 Marks)
Answer.
The tourism sector is a significant contributor to the economy and is also an employment generator. Present U.P. Government brought out "UP Tourism Policy, 2018" with the following target:
- Generating 5 lakh jobs annually
- Aim to invest Rs 5000 crore per year for the next 5 years.
- To increase foreign tourism by 10 percent and domestic tourism by 15 percent.
- The tourism sector will be treated as an industry.
- In the next 5 years, the target of setting up 50 heritage hotels in the state
The following additional efforts have been made to attract tourists:
- To make Kumbh Mela an international event.
- The new slogan "UP Nahi Dekha Toh India Nahi Dekha" has been promoted nationally and internationally.
- The government has launched 20 seater aircraft to visit Dudhwa National Park.
- Investments have been made in several tourism circuits such as Ramayana circuit, Buddhist circuit, wildlife and eco-tourism circuit, Krishna-Braj circuit, Mahabharata circuit, Jain circuit, etc.
Indian Tourism Statistics 2020 report on Uttar Pradesh:
- According to the Indian Tourism Statistics 2020, UP has emerged as the top destination for domestic tourism and the third destination for foreign tourists after Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Required future action:
- Despite the cultural and architectural prosperity in Bundelkhand, there is a lack of tourism due to the lack of infrastructure, which needs to be overcome.
