What is the work participation rate?

 Question.

What is the work participation rate?

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter 1-  Population: Distribution, Density, Growth, and Composition)

Answer.

According to the economic status, the population of India can be divided into three major groups- main workers, marginal workers, and non-workers.

The main worker is a person who works for at least six months in a year. A marginal worker is a person who works for less than six months in a year.

Both the main and marginal workers are considered as the working population. Therefore, the percentage of working population workers to the total population is called the work participation rate.

For example,

  • As per the 2011 census, the proportion of workers (both main and marginal) was about 40 percent of the total population. So, India's work participation rate in 2011 will be 40.
