 Question.

What can be the possible impacts of the consumption of contaminated/unclean water on the people?

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter -6 Water resources)

Answer.

Harmful substances such as micro-organisms (usually from sewage and household waste that pollute the water), toxic chemicals (generally polluted by the use of industries, fertilizers, and pesticides), and other solid harmful wastewater from industries and urban areas together pollute the water.

Unwanted microorganisms and chemicals degrade water quality and it pollutes both surface water and groundwater (as it seeps down and pollutes groundwater). Such polluted water becomes unfit for human consumption.

Following are the possible effects of consuming contaminated/polluted/unclean water on people:

  • Water contaminated with sewage microbes can contain bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Consumption of water contaminated with microorganisms causes diseases such as cholera, typhoid, jaundice, and many infectious diseases.
  • Water contaminated with chemicals like Nitrogen, Pesticides, Fluorite, Uranium, Heavy metals, etc. causes toxicity in the human body, and increases the risk of cancer, and many skin diseases.
