Answer.

The by-products of the petroleum refinery industry are the raw materials for the petrol-chemical industry. Petrochemical is a group of industries that manufactures fertilizers, plastics, synthetic rubber, detergent powder, cosmetic products, waxes, synthetic fibers, etc.

Synthetic fibers are also products of a petrol-chemical industry that are widely used for the manufacture of clothing.

The petroleum refinery industry takes raw materials such as crude oil and produces petroleum, diesel, and various by-products. Several industries use the by-products of petroleum refineries, collectively known as the petrochemical industry.

The group of petrochemical industries can be divided into four sub-groups;

  • polymer
  • synthetic fibers
  • elastomer
  • surfactant intermediate

Following is the distribution of the petrochemical industry:

  • Mumbai is the center of the petrochemical industry.
  • Cracker units are located in Uttar Pradesh (Auraiya), Gujarat (Jamnagar, Gandhi Nagar, and Hazira), Maharashtra (Nagothane and Ratnagiri), West Bengal (Haldia), and Andhra Pradesh (Visakhapatnam).
