 Question.

Explain the meaning of the hinterland.

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-11: International Trade)

Answer.

The meaning of the Hinterland can be understood in the following three ways:

In relation to ports, the hinterland is the area from which goods and services are provided to the port.

In other words, hinterlands are those areas that are far away from the sea coast or major city, or the bank of a large river called the hinterland.

In other words, the area adjacent to a port or city or the bank of a major river that supplies goods and services to it is known as the hinterland.

For example,

  • Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, some part of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra region is the main hinterland of Mumbai port.
  • The region of southern Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka is the main hinterland of Marmagao port.
  • The Hinterland of Kolkata port is Nepal, Bhutan, part of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and the northeastern states.
  • During the British period, ports were used as suction points for resources from their hinterland.
