Services can be classified into five types on the basis of the use of skill and level of knowledge-

  • primary activities
  • secondary activities
  • tertiary service
  • Quaternary services
  • Quinary Services


Quaternary services are services that require specialized knowledge and technical skills and employees of quaternary services are involved in the collection of information, production of information, information dissemination, and research activities.

Quaternary services personnel work in office buildings, elementary schools, universities, classrooms, hospitals, theaters, and brokerage firms.

Examples of personnel in the Quaternary Services are teachers, doctors, researchers, accountants, consultants, brokers, and office professionals.

In developed countries, more than half of the working population works in the knowledge sector or quaternary services.

Due to the development of communication services such as the Internet and telecommunications. Most developed countries have outsourced most quaternary services that are not tied to locally available resources. Quaternary services are neither influenced by the environment nor necessarily dependent on the proximity of the market as primary activities and secondary activities.
