Differentiate between a Gulf and a Strait

 Question.

Differentiate between a Gulf and a Strait.

(Chapter-1 India — Location, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")

Answer.

The following are the differences between the strait and the gulf:

Strait is a narrow water channel that connects two large water bodies. A strait can also be defined as a narrow water channel that separates two land masses. For example, the Palk Strait separates India and Sri Lanka and it also connects the Bay of Bengal with the Arabian Sea. The Glabrater Strait connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean and also separates North Africa and Europe.

A gulf is a part of the sea that extends toward the land. The gulf is usually surrounded by land on three sides and opens to the sea from one side. It is smaller than the bay. For example, the Gulf of Mannar separates India from Sri Lanka.
