Distinguish between site and situation.

 Question.

Distinguish between site and situation.

(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human GeographyChapter- 10. Human Settlements)

Answer.

Two of the major factors for the expansion of human settlements are the site and the situation. Following are the major differences between the site and the situation.

Site is the factor of a human settlement whose information helps us to locate a human settlement on the map easily and accurately whereas situations are the factors that cause the development and expansion of the human settlement.

Site is related to a land location like altitude, latitude, and longitude whereas situations are related to characteristics of human settlements like availability of adequate water, mineral resources, good climate, cultural importance, political stability, government expenditure, etc.

The site generally does not change over time whereas the location of human settlements does change over time as it is dependent on natural and human factors.

For example, in the case of Prayagraj city;

The site of Prayagraj is on the earth at 25°26′09″N latitude and 81°50′47″E longitude and it is situated between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.

The situation of Prayagraj will include cultural importance, pleasant climate, availability of water, fertile soil, plain land, government policy on city development, etc.
