How would you define a settlement?

 Question.

How would you define a settlement?

(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human GeographyChapter- 10. Human Settlements)

Answer.

Settlements are the places where humans live by making their homes. The place of human habitation is called a settlement.

Examples of human settlements are villages, towns, cities, metro-cities, tourist camps in forest areas, etc.

Human settlements consist of clusters of houses. Although we keep on designing, redesigning, or altering the houses, the location of the settlement does not change over time.

There are some settlements that are temporary and people stay there for a short period. For example, tourist camps in forest areas.

There are some settlements in which people have lived permanently for a long time. For example, village, town, etc.

Human geography is basically the study of human settlements as it reflects the nature of human relationships with the environment.
