The Ramganga, the Gomti, the Ghaghra, the Gandak, the Kosi, and the Mahananda are tributaries of the left bank of the Ganges River.

Ramganga is a small river that originates in the Garhwal hills of Uttarakhand. It joins the Ganges near Kannauj.

The Ghaghara originates in the glaciers of Mapchachungo. Tila, Seti, and Beri are the major tributaries of the Ghaghra River in the mountainous region. The Sharda or Kali river joins the Ghaghra river in the plains. The Ghaghra rivers join the Ganges at Ravelganj (Chhapra).

The Gandak consists of two main streams- Kaligandak and Trishulganga. The Gandak originates from the Nepal Himalayas and passes through Central Nepal. Gandak river enters India through the Champaran district of Bihar. It joins the Ganges near Patna.

The Kosi River is an antecedent river which means that the Kosi River has its source north of the Himalayas which rises north of Mount Everest in Tibet. The Kosi river is known to change the course of the river and it causes floods in Bihar. Kosi river is called the 'Sorrow of Bihar'.

The Mahananda River rises in the Darjeeling Hills of West Bengal and flows through the Siliguri Corridor to join the Ganges in the Nawabganj district of Bangladesh.
