Elucidate the statement– “In a well-managed transport system, various modes complement each other”.

(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human GeographyChapter-8. Transport and Communication )

Answer.

Each mode of transport has its advantages and disadvantages. All modes of transport be it roads, railways, airways, or waterways, no one mode is suitable for all geographical conditions and for the whole year. A well-managed transport system in any region requires all modes of the transport system as various modes complement each other and connect the area well.

Following are some insights that clarify the statements:

For short-distance connectivity and door-to-door delivery of goods and services, the road network is the best. In this case, as of now, no other means of transport such as railways, airways, and waterways serve this purpose.

The railway network is best suited for long-distance connections to land routes. It is the most suitable means of transporting heavy materials like iron ore, coal, etc. over long land routes in cheap ways. In this situation, if you use other means of transport like road or air, then it will also be expensive.

Air routes are best suited for long-distance travel of the passenger and movement of high-value perishable goods as it is a fast mode of transport but costly. Airways are also best suited for connectivity in inaccessible areas like mountainous areas. It is most suitable to be used during natural calamities like earthquakes, landslides, and avalanches as the connectivity of the land route deteriorate during this time.

Waterways are the most suitable and cheapest means of transporting heavy goods to other parts of the world via sea.

Pipeline networks are best suited for transporting liquid and gaseous materials.

Ropeways are best suited for the transportation of goods and passengers in hilly areas.

For the above reason, we have seen that each mode of transport has its own advantages and the use of different modes complements each other for a well-managed transport system.
