Question.

The land under cultivation has got reduced day by day. Can you imagine its consequences?

( Chapter - 4 Agriculture, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

Due to the increasing population, the land under cultivation is decreasing day by day and apart from the increasing population, poor quality of land, land degradation, and shifting of agricultural land to secondary activities and human settlements are also reducing the land under cultivation day by day.

Due to the increasing trend of using cultivation land for non-agricultural activities, cultivation land is also going to decrease further in the future.

Following are some of the consequences of the reduction in land under cultivation:

This will increase food insecurity. As it is known, the population is increasing so the demand for food will also increase, and the cultivation of land is decreasing, if the productivity of land is not increased then food insecurity will increase.

Reduction in land under cultivation will also harm agro-based industries as limited land will be first used for food grain production and there will be a shortage of raw materials for agro-based industries.

Due to the reduction in land under cultivation, there will be more pressure on the agricultural land, due to which the quality of the land will decrease. With land degradation again it will lead to the reduction of land under cultivation [ vicious cycle].

Reduction in land under cultivation will lead to fewer employment opportunities and a reduction in food grain production. This will increase social tension.

Reduction in land under agriculture will affect the poor more, due to which the gap between rich and poor will increase further.
