Answer.

Corruption is unethical behavior that encourages individuals to abuse public or organizational power, leading to misuse of government treasury,  administrative inefficiency, and obstruction of national development. Corruption in public life leads to unequal distribution of resources, power, and opportunities. Bribery, nepotism, theft, and cheating are some examples of unethical corrupt practices.

Corruption has been challenging the governance system since ancient times. Prevention of corruption in public life requires a comprehensive approach in the context of misuse of government treasury,  administrative inefficiency, and obstruction of national development. Following are some suggestions for the prevention of corruption:

Education and Awareness: To strengthen official integrity in public life, there is a need to increase awareness about the harm caused by corruption. Inculcating moral behavior and virtues against corruption in public officials and citizens can prevent corruption in public life because corruption is basically unethical behavior that is inherent in individuals, organizations, and society.

Promoting Transparency and Accountability: Transparency and accountability are basic tools of good governance and are also important for preventing corruption in public life. Transparency in government functioning needs to be promoted and information about public spending, budget, and government activities needs to be made available to the public. Public officials need to be held accountable for their actions.

Encouraging Citizen Participation: Citizen participation and public audit in the working of public sectors will promote transparency and accountability which will prevent corruption in public life.

Sharing of best practices: The best practices of other organizations or other countries should be shared to prevent corruption and bring efficiency in administration.

Creating a positive environment for whistleblowers to report corruption: Whistleblowers must be protected against powerful corrupt individuals.

Strengthening the legal and regulatory framework: There is a need for stricter enforcement and punitive measures to create deterrents for corrupt practices. In India, we have many organizations to keep a check on corrupt practices like CBI, Vigilance Department, CAG, etc. However, corruption is still present in public life. There is a need to strengthen this organization.
