Discuss "Commitment" in the context of civil services. (UPPSC 2020)

Answer.

Commitment is passion and dedication toward a particular task. Commitment is an essential value for civil servants which refers to the level of dedication and loyalty towards their duty and responsibilities. Commitment value plays important role in determining the success of civil servants. Indian civil servants hold significant power and responsibility in the governance of the country. 


The following are some roles of commitment in civil services-

Helping to provide efficient and effective services; A civil servant who is committed to their duty provides efficient and effective services to the public and also achieves their target timely.

Helping to uphold other values; Commitment helps civil servants to uphold the values and principles of the Indian constitution and also helps to conserve the rights of the public.

Help in welfare and development; A civil servant who is committed to public services will prioritize the public interest over personal interest and work towards ensuring the welfare and development of the society.

Building social trust; civil servants who lack commitment values are often not able to perform their duties effectively, which can lead to a lack of trust and confidence in the government and civil services.

Prevention of corruption; civil servants who are committed to their duties, may not indulge in corruption and malpractices.


 In conclusion, we can say, committed values in high values in civil services help them to be self-motivated toward the delivery of public services and governance.
