An employee was taking a bribe in his office. His officer caught him red-handed. The officer knows that if he is dismissed from his job, his old parent will become homeless and destitute. Therefore, the officer left him with a warning only. Imagine that you are the same officer. What will you do in these situations? Discuss in detail. (UPPSC 2020)
Answer.
As a responsible officer, I would not tolerate any kind of unethical behavior like taking bribes from employees in my organization. Such conduct (taking a bribe) not only violate the code of conduct of the organization but also the integrity of the organization. Therefore, it is my duty to take appropriate action actions the employee who is taking a bribe.
However, it is also my responsibility to take care of employees and their dependents. In the given scenario, the employee has an old parent who relies on his income, so the dismissal of the job could lead the old parent homeless and destitute.
In this situation, I would first investigate the matter thoroughly to determine the extent of the employee's wrongdoing and habit of taking bribes. If this is the first time, the employee took the bribe and the employee has no prior record of wrongdoing, then I would give him a warning and will give second chance to rectify his behavior.
However, if the employee has a history of unethical behaviors, then I would take strict actions against him as per the established protocol of the organization like disciplinary action or dismissal from the job. In this case, I would also work to ensure that the employeeтАЩs family is not left homeless and destitute. I would also ensure basic services to his old parents from support services organizations ( like NGOs). Doing so, it will make other employees understand the seriousness of his actions and the consequences of any further unethical behavior.
Furthermore, I will also investigate the reason behind the bribes case in our office. I will try to make office functionality transparent and timely delivery of service delivery to the public so that they do not need to pay a bribe for their service.
In conclusion, as an officer, it is my responsibility to ensure the integrity of the organization while also considering the well-being of the employees and their dependents. I will ensure them by taking the above course of action.
