The downfall of the Mauryan gives rise to multiple regional kingdoms. These regional kingdoms were ruled by many native and foreign rulers.

The following were three major divisions of the Indian subcontinent at the time of Post Mauryan Age;

  • Northwest Frontier
  • Northern and Central India
  • Southern India


Northwest Frontier;

The Northwest Frontier of India comprises present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jammu Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana region was ruled by three dynasties-

  • Indo-Greek Ruler
  • Shakas Ruler
  • Kushanas Ruler

Northern and Central India;

Northern, Eastern, and Central India were ruled by four major dynasties-

  • Sunga Dynasty [ 185 BC to 73 BC]
  • Kanva Dynasty ( 73 BC to 28 BC)
  • Satavahana Dynasty [ ruled at Deccan and Central India] [ 60 BC to 225 CE)
  • Chedi Dynasty [ ruled over Kalinga or Odisha]
