( UPPSC, UP PCS Mains General Studies-III/GS-3 2020)

Answer.

The full form of “S-CNG”  is Sequential Compressed Natural Gas. It is a technology that is used in automobile vehicles (Cars, Buses, etc) to optimize the combustion of compressed natural gas (CNG). This technology offers an auto-switch mode to conveniently switch between CNG and petrol fuel.

S-CNG systems are designed to deliver CNG to the engine in a sequential manner, controlling the flow of gas to individual cylinders of the engine.

Compared to conventional CNG technology, here are some of the different uses of S-CNG;

Environmentally friendly technology; S-CNG technology helps reduce fuel consumption as compared to gasoline or diesel, and it also reduces pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particular matter.

High fuel efficiency and cost saving; The sequential delivery of CNG to each cylinder ensures a more balanced combustion process, helping to maximize the utilization of fuel. This leads to cost savings and better mileage of vehicles.

Engine performance; S-CNG increases overall engine performance.

Duel-fuel capability; S-CNG system allows the vehicle to run on both CNG and gasoline ( petrol or diesel) providing flexibility to the vehicle to run on both fuels.

In conclusion, S-CNG enables vehicles higher fuel efficiency, and improved engine performance, and it is an overall environmentally friendly technology. That is why many automobile companies like Maruti-Suzuki have launched S-CNG vehicles in India, and they are working fine.
