Define rotation and revolution. | Class 6- The Earth: Our Habitat ( GEOGRAPHY), SOCIAL SCIENCE

Question.

Define rotation and revolution.

( Chapter 3: Motions of the Earth, Class 6- The Earth: Our Habitat ( GEOGRAPHY), SOCIAL SCIENCE)

Answer.

Earth is the third nearest planet to the sun and the fifth largest planet in our solar system. The motion of the earth is of two types- rotation and revolution.

Rotation:

Rotation refers to the spinning or turning motion of an object around its own axis. In the context of the Earth, rotation is the movement of the Earth around its axis.

Earth takes about 24 hours to one rotation around its axis and this period is known as Earthday. Rotation is the daily motion of the earth.

Day and night happen on Earth due to the rotation motion of the Earth.

Revolution:

Revolution, in the context of celestial bodies, refers to the orbital motion of an object around another object.

In the context of the earth, the movement of the earth around the sun is called revolution. The movement of the earth around the sun happens in a fixed path that is called the orbit.

Earth completes one full revolution around the Sun roughly every 365.25 days, defining a year.

Earth’s orbit is in an elongated elliptical shape. Throughout the orbit, the Earth is inclined in the same direction.

This orbital motion is responsible for the changing seasons as Earth's position relative to the Sun varies throughout the year.
