Which of the following is a greenhouse gas of a gas which can deplete the Ozone Layer?

a) B2H6

b) NF3

c) CCl3F

d) C6H6

Answer. c) CCl3F

Key facts about the Ozone Layer:

There are two types of Ozone: good ozone, which is found in the stratosphere, and bad ozone, which is found in the troposphere and shows a greenhouse gas effect.

The ozone layer is located in the Stratosphere. It prevents ultraviolet radiation from reaching the ground which can cause skin cancer.

Dobson unit is used to measure the thickness of the Ozone layer.

Ozone hole first is seen over Antarctica in 1986.

Chlorin and Bromin are free radicals that react with ozone and cause ozone hole.

Montreal Protocol in 1987 ( effect from 1989) for the conservation of the ozone layer.

Ozone-depleting Substances:

The following are ozone-depleting substances-

  • Halon
  • Carbon Tetrachloride ( CCl4)
  • Chlorofluorocarbons ( CFCs)
  • Hydrochlorofluorocarbons ( HFCs)
  • Methyl Chloroform ( CH3CCl3)
  • Methyl Bromide ( CH3BR)
  • Hydrobromofluorocarbon ( HBFCl)
  • Bromochloro Methane ( CH2BRCL)
