Uttar Pradesh has immense potential for tourism development because of its rich cultural heritage, historical monuments, religious sites, and diverse traditions. 


Present status of the Tourism Sector in India:

The tourism sector in India contributes about 10 % of the Gross Domestic Product ( GDP) and provides about 12 % of employment.

Domestic tourism in India is growing by about 14 % annually.


Highlights of the greater possibilities of tourism in Uttar Pradesh:


Religious Tourism:

Uttar Pradesh is the spiritual heartland of India where Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mathura, and Ayodhya hold great religious significance and attracts pilgrims and devotees throughout the year.

Kumbh Mela happens every twelve years in Prayagraj and is the largest religious gathering in the world.


Heritage Tourism:

Uttar Pradesh is home to six UNESCO World Heritage sites namely:

  • Taj Mahal ( Agra)
  • Agra Fort ( Agra)
  • Fatehpur Sikri
  • Sarnath ( Varanasi)
  • Varanasi River Front
  • Iconic Saree Weaving Cluster of India ( Varanasi and Azamgarh ( Mubarkpur))

These heritage sites attract millions of tourists from around the world who come to explore the rich heritage and architectural marvels of the state.


Ecotourism:

Uttar Pradesh is home to diverse natural landscapes, including the lush forests of the Terai region, the Lakes of Braj Bhumi, and the hills and plateau of the Bundelkhand-Vindhya region.

Ecotourism initiatives focused on wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, bird sanctuaries, and eco-friendly resorts promote sustainable tourism and conservation efforts in the state.

For example, Salkhan Fossils Park, officially known as Sonbhadra Fossils Park, is about 1.4 billion years old and attracts tourists.


Adventure Tourism:

Terai region and Vindhya regions of Uttar Pradesh provide many adventure destinations. For example, Wildlife safaris in Dudhwa National Park are famous.


Cultural Tourism:

Bundelkhand, Puruvanchal, and Braj cultural regions of Uttar Pradesh are home to rich vibrant cultural traditions, music, dance, and fold arts.


Medical and Wellness Tourism:

Uttar Pradesh has the potential to develop medical tourism and wellness centers, especially traditional Ayurveda, Yoga, and alternative therapies.


Uttar Pradesh has great potential in tourism especially in religious sites, cultural heritage, eco-destination, and hospitality, which contributes to economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
