Traditional Embroideries of India and Their Origin | Class 5 EVS | Chapter 8 Clothes — How Things are Made


India has a rich tradition of embroidery and hand stitching. 

Different regions of India have developed their own special styles of embroidery based on local culture, climate, clothing, and traditions. 


The following eight ( 8) embroideries are mentioned in this chapter: 


1. Chikan or Chikankari Embroidery

Chikan or Chikankari Embroidery


Origin:

  • Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh


Features:

  • Chikankari is done mainly on cotton, muslin, silk, and chiffon cloth.
  • White thread is traditionally used on light-coloured fabric.
  • Floral and leaf patterns are very common.
  • It is used in kurtas, sarees, dupattas, and dress materials.


2. Banjara Embroidery

Banjara Embroidery


Origin:

  • Rajasthan


Features:

  • The Banjara tribal community makes this embroidery.
  • It uses colourful threads, mirrors, beads, shells, and coins.
  • Bright colours and geometric designs are common.
  • It is used in bags, clothes, wall hangings, and decorative items.



3. Kantha Embroidery

Kantha Embroidery


Origin:

  • West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura


Features:

  • Old sarees and cloth pieces are stitched together to make useful items.
  • Designs include flowers, birds, animals, and daily life scenes.
  • It is an example of recycling and creative reuse of cloth.



4. Gota Embroidery

Gota Embroidery


Origin:

  • Rajasthan


Features:

  • Gota embroidery is widely used in wedding dresses and festive clothes.
  • It is famous in lehengas, odhnis, and sarees.



5. Phulkari Embroidery

Phulkari Embroidery


Origin:

  • Punjab


Features:

  • “Phulkari” means “flower work.”
  • Bright silk threads are embroidered on cotton cloth.
  • Floral patterns and colourful designs are very common.
  • Phulkari dupattas and shawls are widely used during celebrations and weddings.



6. Toda Embroidery

Toda Embroidery


Origin:

  • Tamil Nadu (Nilgiri Hills)


Features:

  • Made by the Toda tribal community.
  • Red and black thread designs are stitched on white cloth.
  • Geometric patterns are common.



7. Kashmiri Embroidery

Kashmiri Embroidery


Origin:

  • Kashmir


Features:

  • Wool, silk, and pashmina cloth are commonly used.


8. Khneng Embroidery

Khneng Embroidery


Origin:

  • Meghalaya


Features:

  • Practised by tribal communities of Meghalaya.
