1. Answer the following questions briefly.

a) How does a planet differ from a star?

Answer. 

Planet and star are both celestial bodies; however, the following are differences between them:
  • Star does have its own heat and light whereas planet does not have.
  • Star twinkles whereas planet does not.
  • Star is made up of gaseous materials whereas planet is generally made up of solid materials.
  • Star is bigger in size as compared to a planet.
  • The planet rotates around the star whereas the star does not.


b) What is meant by the ‘Solar System’?

Answer.

The solar system is comprised of the Sun, eight planets, satellites, and some other celestial bodies such as asteroids and meteoroids.


c) Name all the planets according to their distance from the sun.

Answer.

The following are planets increasing distance from the Sun:

  • Mercury( nearest to the Sun)
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune ( farthest from the Sun)


d) Why is the Earth called a unique planet?

Answer:

Earth is the only planet in the earth system that has the following characteristics:

  • Favorable condition for life support
  • Earth is neither too cold nor too hot
  • Earth has the liquid form of water
  • The abundance of oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere


e) Why do we see only one side of the moon always?

Answer.

It takes 27.3 days for the Moon to revolve around the Earth and rotate around its axis, i.e., both take equal time to move. Because of the synchronous motion [rotation and revolution] of the moon, we always get to see only one side of the moon.


(f) What is the Universe?

Answer.

  • The group of galaxies is called the universe. The universe is so big that we cannot even imagine how big it is.
  • There are billions of stars in a galaxy.
