 1. In a democracy why is universal adult franchise important?

Answer:

  • Universal adult franchise means everyone in the country above 18 years old irrespective of caste, religion, race, community, and economic status has the right to cast one vote.
  • The universal adult franchise provides equality to every citizen as everyone has a single vote to cast. Equality is a basic element of democracy.


2. Re-read the box on Article 15 and state two ways in which this Article addresses inequality?

Answer:

Article 15 prohibited discrimination on the ground of religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth.

  • The state shall not discriminate against the citizen on the above fives ground.
  • Citizens shall not be discriminated against to access the public place on the above-ground except, be subject to disability, liability, had the restriction to access.

3. In what ways was Omprakash Valmiki’s experience similar to that of the Ansaris?

Answer:

  • Ansaris faced discrimination based on religion; no one was willing to rent them.
  • Omprakash faced discrimination or inequality based on caste, as school teacher forces him to sweep the school ground, society did not allow him to sit equally on the same mat.

4. What do you understand by the term “all persons are equal before the law”? Why do you think it is important in a democracy?

Answer:

Everyone has the same law. Law applies to all the person irrespective of social and economical background.


Question:

What is the midday meal program? Can you list three benefits of the program? How do you think this program might help promote greater equality?

Answer:

The midday meal program was started in Tamil Nadu in 2001, in this program cooked meal was served to school children at the noon.

The following are three benefits:

  • Enrollment and regular attendance of students increased.
  • It also helps to reduce hunger and malnutrition problems.
  • It promotes equality as every student in the government school gets a cooked meal irrespective of the social and economic background. In many schools, the meal is being cooked by Dalit women.
