 1. In this chapter you have read that health is a wider concept than illness. Look at this quote from the Constitution and explain the terms ‘living standard’ and ‘public health’ in your own words.

Answer:

Health means the ability to free from illness and disease. Our constitution states that it is the duty of the state to raise the living standard and public health;

  • Living standard means having sufficient income to all population to avail the sufficient nutritions and good health to family members, able to provide quality of education to children, and having the quality of houses.
  • Public health means proving a healthy and clean environment to all populations and free of cost medical facilities to all or at least to those people who are not able to afford it.


2. What are the different ways through which the government can take steps to provide healthcare for all? Discuss.

Answer:

The following things needs:

  • Sufficient health infrastructure such as health centers, hospitals, ambulances, laboratory for testing, blood bank, basic and advanced health tools, medicines are lacking in both rural and urban areas of government hospitals. Needs to take care of it.
  • Doctors, qualified health worker, and nurses are not willing to works in rural areas, need to encourage them with different incentives.
  • Needs to inculcate positive attitudes and compassion in health workers of government hospitals towards the needy person.
  • The government should spend more on health sectors.


3. What differences do you find between private and public health services in your area? Use the following table to compare and contrast these.

Answer:

  • Private hospitals cost more and give better health services than public health services.
  • Private hospitals sometimes do unnecessary testing and suggested costly medicine whereas public health services suggest generic medicine.
  • There is a positive attitude of health worker in private hospitals.

4. ‘Improvement in water and sanitation can control many diseases.’ Explain with the help of examples.

Answer:

  • There are many communicable diseases that are mainly water-borne such as jaundice, diarrhoea, worms, hepatite. 
  • Nearly 21 % of all the communicable disease were waterborne.
  • Nearly two million cases of malaria reported every year in India, it can be avoided by sanitation work.
  • TB, cholera, chikungunya, etc can be avoided by proper sanitation.
