It is weathering that is responsible for biodiversity on the earth. How?

Question:

It is weathering that is responsible for biodiversity on the earth. How?

Answer:

Basically, biodiversity is the result of vegetation because we know that there is more vegetation in the equatorial region and hence there is more biodiversity there. And the growth of vegetation mainly depends on two things, that is:

  • Depth of weathering or soil depths
  • Climate

If there is no weathering of rocks, then there will be no erosion and no soil will be formed. When there is no soil, there will be no vegetation growth and no biodiversity. Therefore, weathering is responsible for the biodiversity on earth.

Try to solve the following questions:

  • Explain weathering and mass wasting and describe their geomorphic significance.  (UPSC 2014, 250 words, 20 marks)
