Is weathering essential as a pre-requisite in the formation of soils? Why?

Question.

Is weathering essential as a prerequisite in the formation of soils? Why?

Answer:

Yes, the first step of soil formation is weathering. It is weathering or depth of weathered materials which is the basic input to soil formation.

  • First, the weathered materials are colonized by bacteria or small plants like mosses and lichens. And, many microorganisms may take shelter within the weathered materials.
  • Dead remains of the plants and microorganisms help in humus formation.
  • Small grasses and ferns start growing.
  • Later bushes, trees, and other animal make their habitat.

So we can say, weathering is essential as a prerequisite in the formation of soils.

Try to solve the following questions:

  • Explain weathering and mass wasting and describe their geomorphic significance.  (UPSC 2014, 250 words, 20 marks)
