People and India's politics were not Communal before 1858, Justify | UPSC General Studies-I

Question.

Before 1858, the people and politics of India were not communal. Justify.

Answer.

In a negative sense, communalism speaks of promoting the interests of one religion, political,  and society.

Following are the evidence that tells us that before 1858 people and Indian politics were not communal:

The Revolt of 1857 saw complete coordination/unity between Hindus and Muslims at all levels from people, soldiers to rulers against the British.

For example,

  • All the rebels, whether Hindu or Muslim, accepted Bahadur Shah Zafar as the emperor.
  • Rani Lakshmibai was supported by Afghan soldiers.
  • Nana Saheb had Azimullah (Muslim political campaigner).

The feelings of Hindus and Muslims were respected by each other.

For example,

  • cow slaughter was banned by Muslim chiefs in some of their territories.
