Mention geographical factors controlling the reorganization of a state.

 Question.

Mention geographical factors controlling the reorganization of a state.  ( UPPSC, 2020, 10 Marks)

Answer.

Geographical factors (mainly relief) and cultural factors (mainly language) are two important factors for the reorganization of a state. Geographical factors such as relief, soil, climate, vegetation, other natural resources, are very much contributing factors for the socio-economic development of the region or state.

Although the reorganization of the state has not been done in India on the basis of such geographical factors, yet the reorganization of the state reflects the impression of the geographical factor, and many states in India are based on natural homogeneity (relief and availability of resources):

For example,

  • Desert features can be seen in Rajasthan.
  • Himachal Pradesh was separated from Punjab due to hilly terrain.
  • Uttarakhand was separated from Uttar Pradesh due to hilly areas.
The following geographical factors are also controlling the factors of state reorganization but are lacking in the Indian context:
  • The state should be reorganized on the basis of climate; It helps in streamlining both the governance and the planning system.
  • The uniformity of vegetation and soil provides better results in agricultural and industrial planning.
  • A state with natural homogeneity can help in disaster prevention
