What is the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone?

 Question.

What is the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone?

(Chapter-4 Climate, Class 11 NCERT geography "India Physical Environment")

Answer.

The Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a low-pressure area near the equator where trade winds from both hemispheres meet. In this region, the wind rises up to the tropopause. The region receives rainfall everyday afternoon.

Most of the time, the inter-tropical convergence zone lies near the equator. However, it follows the motion of the Sun. In the winter season, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) moves toward the Southern Hemisphere and during the summer it moves toward the Northern Hemisphere.

In the month of July, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is located on the Gangetic plains of India at about 20 to 25 degrees north latitude. It is also called a monsoon trough.

In the month of January, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) lies at about 20 to 25 degrees south latitude.
