(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human GeographyChapter-7. Tertiary and Quaternary Activities )

Answer.

Transport and communication services are part of the service sector of the economy. Natural resources, economic activities, and markets are rarely found in one place; Transport and communication provide links between natural resources, industries, and markets.

Transport and communication services are the backbones of the development of any country's economy.

Following are the importance of transport and communication services:

Modern society requires a fast and efficient transportation system to aid in the production, distribution, and consumption of goods. Transport services facilitate the smooth movement of people, raw materials, manufacturing goods, and services from one place to another.

Manufacturing industries and human settlements are established where there is a well-developed transport line—roads, railways, ports and airports, and means of communication.

Communication services include the transmission of words, messages, facts, and ideas. Some developments such as TV, radio, mobile, telephone, satellite, and internet have made communication independent of transport.

The Internet has revolutionized the global communication system and business activities at large.

The Internet has brought consumers, traders, and manufacturers on a single platform.

Countries which have developed transport and communication sectors are overall more developed, and countries that have poor transport and communication services are less developed. For example, the African continent is less industrialized and developed because it has less developed transport and communication systems; North America and Europe have the densest road and rail networks in the world and making them a developed regions.

A high standard of living and quality of life depend on efficient transport, communication, and trade.

Due to the above importance of transport and communication services, they are known as the lifeline of the economy.
