Organize a debate on the food security of India, its need, and its efforts.

Question.

Organize a debate on the food security of India, its needs, and its efforts.

( Chapter - 4 Agriculture, Cass X NCERT Contemporary India -II )

Answer.

Food security means availability and access to sufficient food for all populations throughout the year. After the success of the Green Revolution, India has enough food grains for all the population to meet the requirements for the whole year, but there are still problems with affordability and accessibility to enough food for all the population.

Still, the large population of India does not have enough purchasing power to buy enough food. Also sometimes due to various constraints like transportation problems, a large part of the Indian population faces food shortages and they are not able to get enough food for their family.

food security and pillars of food security

Requirements of Food Safety in India:

Food security in India is very important for various reasons. Food is the basic source of energy for humans. In a country whose most people are hungry, that country cannot progress. Therefore, food security is very important for the development of the country.

Food security is very essential for healthy human development and sustainable development of countries in the long run.

According to the Global Hunger Index 2022, jointly released by Worldwide and WealthHungerLife, India ranks 107 out of 121 countries. This indicates that India has a low level of food security.

According to the Human Development Index 2022 released by the United National Development Program (UNDP), India is ranked 132 out of 191 countries.

In both indicators, India can do better by achieving food security.

Apart from better performance in both indices, India can achieve faster economic growth by achieving food security.

Food Security Efforts in India:

There are three main pillars of food security:

  • sufficient food stock
  • access to food grains for the public
  • food affordability

India has enough food grains for all the population, however, to achieve food security in India, India has to work on the pillars of accessibility and affordability.

India already has some systems in place to make food grains accessible and affordable to the poor population, Some of the schemes are:

  • Public Distribution System; Under the PDS system, the government provides food grains such as rice and wheat to the poor population at a nominal rate (Rs 1).
  • Mid-day meal to the children.
  • Food for children and mothers under the Integrated Child Development Programme.

However, corruption and inefficiency in the above system are not giving many results in access and affordability of food to the large population. The Public Distribution System (PDS), mid-day meals, and the Integrated Child Development Program need to be made more efficient.

There is also a need for affordable food grains for the population without hurting the profits of our hardworking farmers.

In this way, we can make our great country greater and more developed by getting food security.
