Question.

Give reasons, Plants and animals depend on each other.

( Chapter - 1 Environment, Class 7 NCERT, Our Environment( Geography) )

Answer.

Plants and animals are the two major components of the biotic component of the environment. Plants (trees, grasses, herbs, shrubs, and mosses) and living organisms (animals, birds, fish, insects, and microorganisms) depend on each other for survival. Animals cannot live without plants and plants cannot live without animals.

Plants and animals are dependent on each other for the following reasons:

Plants are autotrophs which means that they are the primary producers of food in biological communities.

Plants also release oxygen during photosynthesis which is a life-saving gas for living beings.

Plants provide shelter to animals such as birds and various other animals.

Therefore animals are directly and indirectly dependent on plants for food, shelter, and oxygen.

Animals assist plants in photosynthesis by providing fertilizers, carbon dioxide (CO2), and other minerals. Mineral recycling and fertilizers get into the soil with the help of microorganisms (bacteria and earthworms) which are a type of animal.

All living organisms emit carbon dioxide into the environment which helps plants in photosynthesis.

In addition to recycling CO2 and minerals, living organisms also help in the process of soil formation through mechanical weathering processes that support plant growth.

Animals also help plants through pollination and seed dispersal.

For the above reasons we can say that plants and animals depend on each other.
