Differentiate between tolerance and compassion. | UPPSC General Studies 4 Mains ETHICS Solutions 2022

  Question.

Differentiate between tolerance and compassion. (UPPSC 2022)

Answer.

Tolerance and compassion are two important values and both refer to a state of sensitivity toward others. It is necessary for public servants to have both in order to act in the best interest of the public. But there is also some difference between tolerance and compassion which are as follows-

Tolerance refers to the ability to accept the views, beliefs, and practices of others, even if they differ from one's own, while compassion refers to empathizing with others and feeling their pain or suffering, and taking action to alleviate it.

Tolerance helps civil servants to work with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs without prejudice while compassion helps civil servants not only recognize the difficulties of others but actively help them overcome those difficulties.

A civil servant who is tolerant but lacks compassion will respect diversity but lack the motivation to solve their problems.

A civil servant who lacks tolerance but is compassionate will be eager to alleviate the suffering of others but will have difficulties in managing people and faces difficulties in working with people.

In conclusion, we can say that tolerance and compassion are two different values but both are interrelated, both help civil servants to build trust and reduce the problem of the public.
