Question.

Evaluate the relevance of the "Spirit of service" in the context of civil service.  ( UPPSC, UP PCS Mains General Studies-4/Ethics 2018)

Answer.

"Spirit of service" means being committed and dedicated to your duties, and not expecting to get anything in return from services.

The best example of the "Spirit of service" is the service provided by Laxman to lord Rama in Ramayana.

In the context of civil service, the "Spirit of service" is highly relevant because the work of civil servants is to provide quality services to the public. However, many civil servants believe in authoritarian values and consider the public as their slaves, especially police departments.

The spirit of service in civil service is highly relevant due to the following reference;

Spirit of service inspires public servants to work as servants for the public, not as an officer.

Public servants help in giving priority to their personal interests or agenda in the service of service. Which leads to the welfare of society.

Spirit of service helps public servants to be dedicated to reducing inequality in society by working towards the upliftment of the weaker sections of society.

The heart of anyone can be changed by selfless service. The service of public servants helps to create trust between the general public and the government.

Spirit of service helps public servants in the effective implementation of policy.

Spirit of service and sympathy towards the weaker sections of society helps to handle the situation more compassionately.

Civil servants get mental peace from service which helps in reducing corruption in society.

The spirit of service helps public servants to function in a more transparent and accountable manner, which helps in good governance.

In conclusion, we can say that the Spirit of service is essential in civil services so that the public services ensure the work of public servants in the best interest of the public, and at the same time, the expectation of nothing from the service also provides mental peace to the public servants.
